OLC Opening Day
February 14, 1995

Here are two news reports from the time of the opening of Orangethorpe Learning Center in 1995. They appeared in newsletters of Orangethorpe United Methodist Church shortly before and after opening day...

HOMEWORK CENTER
OPENING SOON!!!

Plans for our after-school center are moving rapidly ahead. We plan to open the doors of the Orangethorpe Learning Center on Tuesday, February 14, with a lot of help from our brothers and sisters from Cornerstone and from Orangethorpe Christian Church. The Learning Center will operate in our own Patio Lounge Mondays through Thursdays (except for school holidays) from 2:45 to 4:45 pm.

We have received very generous gifts from several Churchfamily members which will enable us to buy many of the supplies we need to get started. We would also welcome the donation of such materials as children's books, encyclopedias, puzzles, flash cards, board games and crayons. If you have such items in good condition and would like to contribute them to this ministry, please drop them off at the Church office and mark them "Learning Center".

We also welcome additional volunteers to join our tutoring team. If you haven't already signed up and would like to take part, please call the Church office or contact Martha Hyde or Chuck Carey.

NOTE -- There will be a kickoff meeting for all Learning Center volunteers at 12:30 pm on Sunday, February 12, in the Patio Lounge. Please make every effort to attend!

LEARNING CENTER
NOW OPEN!!!

The Orangethorpe Learning Center has been open for a week now, with attendance growing day by day. Starting with just two children on a rainy Valentine's Day, our attendance increased to seven, then nine. We know we will see more children next week, as the news spreads. Our own Churchfamily children are most welcome to join us, as several did last week.

We are considering hiring a part-time Learning Center Coordinator. This person would be present each day and would handle a variety of administrative tasks, as well as working with the children. Anybody who is interested in the position should contact Martha Hyde or Chuck Carey.

We still need some reading materials suitable for 4th to 6th graders. If you can contribute them, or other supplies, please drop them off at the Church office and mark them "Learning Center".

The Learning Center operates in our Patio Lounge Mondays through Thursdays (except for school holidays) from 2:45 to 4:45 pm.
