Orangethorpe Learning Center lost a good friend when Marilyn Warren passed away October 3, 2008. The brief biographical sketch in her Orange County Register obituary, while interesting, fails to do her justice...
Warren, Marilyn, 80, of Brea. Native of Winfield, Kansas, arrived "home" in California in the early 60's. Served as 1st/sometimes 2nd grade teacher for 40 + years starting in Coffeyville, KS and retiring in 1992 from California Elementary school in Orange. Mrs. Warren served in many capacities, including choir, at Orangethorpe Christian, volunteered at the Orangethorpe Learning Center, and supported Boy Scout Troop 885 in La Habra. She taught, volunteered, and continued her education even as she battled various medical challenges until succumbing to lung cancer October 3rd, 2008. She is survived by her son, Marty Warren, and served as a grandmother to eight children...
We who knew Marilyn at the learning center remember her as a kind and patient woman who always challenged our children to do their best. During the days when she was an OLC volunteer, Marilyn was known to our students as "the sticker lady". She loved to help the kids and reward them with stickers for homework well done. At the time of her death, Marilyn was a member of the OLC board of directors, although health problems had prevented her from playing an active role during the last years of her life.
Marilyn Warren believed in welcoming children and their families to our churches and could never understand why some people didn't want to do so. She truly put into practice Jesus' command: "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them..."
